As cars became increasingly connected, cybersecurity concerns jumped to the forefront. To take this challenge head on, one prominent automaker wanted to develop a proactive approach to supporting and protecting its vehicles on the road, in real time.
Following a comprehensive cybersecurity assessment, a leading automaker realized it needed tools to better manage the impact and application of the streams of data across its business. In an industry like automaking, where cars are increasingly connected to a variety of devices, data is increasingly available, but its curation—and how it’s used— can be a competitive advantage.
New data analysis tools would enable the company to proactively manage product safety and protect their customers. Updated software and integrated technologies would provide a significant competitive advantage.
Each time a key was put in the ignition of one of tens of millions of vehicles, sophisticated systems were needed to efficiently collect and assess data. We worked with the auto manufacturer’s cybersecurity and data science teams to evolve traditional approaches to information technology into real-time responses with the potential to save lives.

Our domain expertise and prior experience with the automaker were crucial jumping-off points for the next phase of the partnership, which would enable real-time monitoring and visibility into their global fleet to best respond to cybersecurity vulnerabilities.

Disparate data that came in via the automaker’s connected vehicles needed to be organized and interpreted. Starting with existing technologies and acquiring existing data sets, we were able to avoid an expensive system overhaul. Instead, we took incremental steps to build and quickly deploy a solution.

The system and tool set that we developed allows the automaker to proactively monitor its connected cars for cyber anomalies. That level of visibility, coupled with a dynamic dashboard, gives data analysts the ability to address problems quickly and efficiently.
“The tool is allowing us to move from a process that, in the past, would take days, and in some incidences a week or more, down to minutes,” reports an executive from the automaker.
While our work focused on cybersecurity, the capacity to collect data that improves the customer experience is a key area of growth for automakers. “We’re able to look at a car in a way that’s much different than we have in the past,” says Booz Allen Principal Rick Whitford.
