CG ApplebyOn October 8, 2009, Booz Allen Hamilton Executive Vice President & Chief Legal Officer CG Appleby was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Washington Metropolitan Area Corporate Counsel Association (WMACCA).

The honor recognized Appleby’s 34 years of service to Booz Allen, his 13 years as its Chief Legal Officer, and his leadership role in the WMACCA and Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC). WMACCA is the largest chapter of the global ACC.

Appleby received the award at the 5th Annual WMACCA Corporate Counsel Awards, held at the Tyson’s Corner Ritz Carlton in McLean, Virginia. More than 300 people attended the event, which honors the work of the region’s leading in-house counsel practitioners.

The event program summarized the key tenets to which Appleby credits his professional success:

  • Integrate your legal advice with a practical business answer
  • Explain significant developments in the law before your business colleagues have to ask
  • Give your clients practical answers that allow them to proceed
  • Always hire lawyers who are smarter than you
  • Be prudent and wise with your budget
  • Understand your client’s business as well as they do

Appleby provides legal and risk management services to Booz Allen in support of policy formulation, litigation, and governance matters, and ensures compliance with the firm’s professional policies, practices, and ethics. He serves on Booz Allen’s Senior Management Team (the Leadership Team), on its Operating Council, and as Secretary for its Board of Directors. Appleby’s board memberships include the Northern Virginia Community Foundation; Professional Services Council; Fairfax County Chamber of Commerce; Council for Excellence in Government; CharityWorks; and Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum.

In 2008, Appleby provided valuable counsel in Booz Allen’s separation of its federal government and global commercial businesses and its sale of a majority stake of its government consulting business to The Carlyle Group.

A panel of WMACCA judges selects Corporate Counsel award winners from a pool of applicants, based on responses to questions such as the length of time in his/her current position, the individual’s contributions to the organization’s well-being, and specific examples of how the individual has personified professional excellence.

The largest regional bar association for in-house counsel, WMACCA has more than 1,700 members from 700 organizations in Washington, D.C., the Commonwealth of Virginia, and suburban Maryland.
