Booz Allen is Celebrated as a 2008 Smithsonian Benefactor

Firm’s pro bono contributions are recognized by the internationally renowned Institution with a unique award.

2008 Smithsonian Benefactor award - framed copy of the handwritten will of James SmithsonIn September, Booz Allen Hamilton was honored by the Board of Regents and Secretary as a 2008 Smithsonian Benefactor, in appreciation of the firm’s extensive pro bono work for the Smithsonian Institution over the past year.

The award was a framed copy of the handwritten will of James Smithson, dated October 23, 1826, which describes his founding vision for the Smithsonian Institution.  Senior Vice President Dave Aldrich accepted the award on behalf of the firm.

As summarized in the event program, “the Smithsonian began with the generosity of one farsighted individual, and it continues with the dedicated support of many.” The event celebrated the Smithsonian’s 162-year tradition of philanthropy by honoring Booz Allen and others as honored guests and “new” Smithson Will Recipients for their contributions to Smithsonian art, culture, history, and science.

In his will, Smithson bequeathed his fortune to America upon the death of his heirs: “…to found at Washington, under the name of the Smithsonian Institution, an establishment for the increase and diffusion of knowledge among men.”

“What better gift to give the
Institution whose mission is to ‘increase and diffuse knowledge among men’ than Booz Allen’s single greatest asset—its intellectual capital,” says Principal Joe Suarez. “The firm proudly shares its intellectual capital with the Smithsonian Institution for the benefit all mankind.”

In 2007 and 2008, Booz Allen’s pro bono efforts on behalf of the
Institution included support for two exhibits at the National Museum of Natural History—“Written in Bone,” which opens in February 2009, and “Oceans,” which opened in fall 2008; assistance in developing a digitization policy for the Smithsonian's overall collection; and communications strategy support for the acting Secretary.

The firm was also one of the underwriters of the 2007 National Powwow that was presented in Washington, D.C. by the National Museum of the American Indian, and it conducted a market and visitors’ study for the National Air and Space Museum's Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.

Other 2008 Smithsonian Benefactors included A&E Television Networks, Bank of America, and individual supporters.
