The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is naming a cancer research grant in honor of Booz Allen Hamilton (NYSE:BAH), because its employees raised more than $100,000 in a single year for LLS’s Light The Night® Walk.
Booz Allen, a national partner of Light The Night Walk, will be recognized for its effort at a special ceremony on Friday, November 11 at the Sheraton Gunter in San Antonio.
Booz Allen will be affiliated with Sang Eun Lee, Ph.D., an LLS-funded researcher at the UT Health Science Center in San Antonio. The goal of Dr. Lee’s research project is to use the latest technologies to better understand genetic abnormalities that cause chromosome translocations that are involved in a wide range of cancers, including lymphomas and leukemias. Dr. Lee’s work will hopefully lead to the development of targeted therapies to treat patients with these cancers.
Light The Night Walk is LLS’s annual fundraising walk held each fall in communities across North America to honor lives touched by cancer, and to raise funds and awareness for blood cancer research and patient services.
In 2010, the Booz Allen San Antonio office raised more than $83,000, exceeding its $65,000 goal. Since 2006, the San Antonio office has raised over $107,000 in support of the South Central Texas Chapter of LLS. Nationwide, Booz Allen employees raised nearly $135,000 during the 2010 Light The Night Walk.
“The first year, 20 San Antonio office members were involved in the Light The Night Walk,” says San Antonio-based Lead Associate Steve McGinn, the Walk Event Committee Chair in San Antonio. “In 2010, we had more than 300 Booz Allen employees participate,” he says. The 2010 Light The Night Walk in San Antonio was the most successful in its history, both in terms of participation and fundraising. More than 8,000 people attended the walk and raised approximately $950,000.
“LLS is deeply appreciative of Booz Allen employees’ enthusiastic participation in Light The Night Walk, and the company’s tremendous support of LLS’s efforts to help find safer and more effective treatments for blood cancer patients,” said Kathy Griesenbeck, Executive Director of the South Central Texas Chapter.
Booz Allen Leadership, National Light The Night staff, and the LLS South Texas Chapter staff will attend the ceremony beginning at 8:30 a.m.
