More than 100 Booz Allen Hamilton employees participated in the Face of America Ride as riders and volunteers in an emotional, 110-mile bicycle ride with over 500 other cyclists in a moving tribute to our wounded warriors of the Afghan and Iraq wars. Sixty of the participants were service members with traumatic brain injuries, amputations, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
The seventh annual “Face of America Ride,” was organized by World T.E.A.M. Sports, a firm nonprofit partner that organizes challenging sports events for riders of all abilities. On April 28, Booz Allen riders began their journey in Crystal City, circling the Iwo Jima memorial before heading into Maryland and Pennsylvania for the two day bike ride alongside and with wounded veterans.
Over 50 Booz Allen volunteers staffed this event at numerous points along the course. Volunteers assisted at rider registration and manned the firm sponsored rest stop in Potomac, MD, welcoming the riders, serving refreshments, and assisting with their needs. At the finish in Gettysburg, Booz Allen volunteers were present to direct riders, assist with the loading of bikes for the return to DC, and marshal the buses.
At the kick-off reception held on Friday, SVP Carl Salzano and SVP Angie Messer shared their inspirational thoughts with riders as they prepared for the next day’s journey. Angie and SVP Robin Portman were recognized as the top two individual fundraisers, and the Booz Allen Cycling Team was recognized as the top fundraiser totaling more than $73,000, which provided wounded warriors an opportunity to participate in the ride as well as future World T.E.A.M. Sports events.
“I am extraordinarily proud of the firm’s spirit of service, of the my Booz Allen colleagues that made the ride and supported the event in so many ways, for all those that made generous contributions, and for our veterans who made the journey,” said SVP Carl Salzano. “We do this because we care. We especially care that our veterans have the opportunity to participate in an event that proves to them and others that they are able to overcome challenges and live full and productive lives. And we are proud to team with an organization such as World T.E.A.M. Sports that will use the money raised to perpetuate these types of events and provide specialized equipment for our veterans in the future.”
