Role Models, Mentors Helped Shape Booz Allen Principal Lucy Sorrentini’s Success in Leadership
Booz Allen Hamilton Principal Lucy Sorrentini was recently spotlighted in Profiles in Diversity Journal marking Hispanic Heritage Month and was the opening speaker at the Senior Executive Session at Great Minds in STEM (GMiSTEM).
Lucy, a Recruiting and Resource Management leader in Booz Allen’s People Services, is an executive sponsor of the firm’s Latin American Forum (LAF). The LAF celebrates the heritage, culture, and diversity of the firm’s Latino and Hispanic community, coordinates professional development programs, and provides community service opportunities to all staff.
In Profiles in Diversity Journal, Lucy says of her Hispanic heritage, “It provides me with many personal and professional benefits. Building strong relationships, working hard, appreciating opportunities, valuing differences, focusing on what is right, and giving back come naturally to me in large part because of my heritage and upbringing.”
Growing up, she was inspired by her mother’s strong work ethic as a Puerto Rican immigrant to the US. Lucy’s father died at an early age, forcing her mom—a young widow—to learn quickly how to navigate work outside of the home while raising seven children. “She taught me all about work life balance, even before it became a value in corporate America,” says Lucy. “Her stories, conduct, and personal example of our rich heritage imprinted on me how much a Puerto Rican woman can and does contribute to society.”
Lucy also attributes her success to the leaders and colleagues she has worked with over the years. “I have also been blessed with and am very grateful for an amazing extended family and a great group of mentors, sisters and friends who have gone out of their way to listen, mentor, and coach me, and who have been open to receiving the same in return,“ she says. “These are the folks who have stood by me in times of achievement, success, and adversity.”
In her speech at GMiSTEM, Lucy praised the organization whose mission includes enlightening, educating, motivating, and enabling underserved students to reach for and pursue careers in the STEM disciplines of science, technology, engineering, and math. Booz Allen was a sponsor of the Senior Executive Session, themed Innovation and Collaboration in STEM for America.
She spoke of Booz Allen’s commitment to diversity. “We are committed to promoting diversity and inclusion at the firm. Booz Allen has many firmwide diversity forums, including the Latin American Forum, in which employees actively participate. The forums help staff grow personally and professionally through learning and career development series, mentoring circles, panel discussions, and other events.”
