International Coastal Cleanup Day

September 17, 2011

Nationwide

To protect and improve the health of global waterways and oceans, Booz Allen Hamilton has joined the nonprofit Ocean Conservancy (OC) as a Living Waters Partner to support its annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC)—the world’s largest volunteer effort of its kind.

On a single day in September, ICC volunteers of all ages, backgrounds, and nationalities collect and remove trash from beaches, rivers, lakefronts, and waterways throughout the world, document what they find, and help change behaviors that produce marine debris. Cleanup events are scheduled on and around Saturday, September 17th, nationwide.

During the 2010 ICC, 615,407 individuals collected more than 8 million pounds of trash—enough to cover about 170 football fields—along shorelines at 5,438 sites in 114 countries and 46 U.S. states, along with the District of Columbia. The greatest contributors toward marine debris:

  • Cigarettes and cigarette filters, comprising 19% of total amount
  • Plastic beverage bottles
  • Plastic bags

Underwater cleanups were also conducted by over 8,000 divers, who collected more than 251,00 pounds of underwater debris.

For the 2011 ICC, staff may register online to participate in a local event, or contact Community Partnerships & Philanthropy team member James Murphy to find out more. Employees are encouraged to invite their family, friends, and clients.
