Leading experts from Booz Allen Hamilton played a prominent role in the 2006 Aspen Ideas Festival, leading discussions in the Global Dynamics and Health tracks. The Ideas Festival, which took place July 3-9, drew 200 leaders from around the globe and across many disciplines to serve as panelists on topics ranging from arts and culture to the American experience, and global dynamics.
Global Dynamic Discussions
Senior Vice President Mike McConnell was a panelist in the plenary session, “Order, Law and Governance in the 21st Century,” along side General Colin Powell, U.S. Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer, and U.S. Senator Bob Bennett (R - Utah). James Steinberg, Dean of the Lyndon Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, moderated the discussion.

McConnell also moderated a panel that examined “Terrorism, Technology and Globalization,” which included author Richard Benjamin; former chief of Britain’s Secret Intelligence Service Sir Richard Dearlove; James Steinberg; U.S Representative Jane Harman (D - California); and Booz Allen Vice President R. James Woolsey, a former director of the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency.
Senior Vice President David Aldrich moderated a discussion on “Water: The New Currency,” which included Rosina Bierbaum of the University of Michigan; John Holdren of the John F. Kennedy School at Harvard; M.A. Sanjayan of The Nature Conservancy; and Harriet Babbit, formerly of USAID.
The Global Dynamics track explored six key drivers shaping today’s global environment: demographics, technology, economics, society, environment, and governance. The intersection of these key drivers creates complex, interdependent, and often unpredictable consequences that transcend geographic borders and organizational boundaries. Booz Allen vice presidents moderated panels in the following areas:
Health Track
As part of the “The State of Our Health” track, Senior Vice President Heather Burns moderated the plenary session “Can the Global Economy Prepare for a Pandemic?” She was joined by David Nabarro, the system senior coordinator of Avian and Human Influenza of the United Nations, and Eric Noji, the senior policy advisor for Health and National Security in the Gingrich Group.

Senior Vice President Gary Ahlquist moderated the panel “The Future of Health Care,” which included Bruce Bodaken of Blue Shield of California, Victor Dzau of Duke University, and Zeke Emanuel of the National Institute of Health. Vice Presidents Charley Beever (“Global Health Priorities”) and Bob Hutchens (“Chronic Disease and Preventative Care”) also moderated health panels in Aspen.
Other Subject Areas
Booz Allen thought leaders also took part in panels in areas outside of these two tracks.
Senior Vice President Eric Spiegel led a discussion on “China and India in the World Economy,” which included panelists Minxin Pei, senior associate and director of the China Program at the Carnegie Endowment for Justice, Tolerance and Peace; Raghuram G. Rajan, economic counselor and director of research at the International Monetary Fund; and Lyric Hughes Hale, CEO and publisher of China Online.
R. James Woolsey took part in a discussion on “Renewable Fuels: Boon or Boondoggle,” with Steven Koonin, chief scientist of BP. And Senior Executive Advisor Paul Anderson participated in a panel on “Business and Responsible Leadership: Ethics after Enron.”
