I agree with Dr. Voas, but would add that there are many levels of trust. In healthcare for example, you trust your doctor to diagnose you correctly. You trust your clinician to perform procedures properly. Once you add the information technology element in the form of healthcare systems, identity management components come into play. Trust becomes a matter of people, process, and technology. Today, we have to define trust and make sure the concept is used the same way across the board.

 

Reacting to Jeff Voas:
Trust is not a static property.  It’s something that continually evolves over time.  I mean, what I trust today I may not trust tomorrow.  I think we all understand that notion.  But it has to be built into this principle, if you want to start talking about ecosystems, building trust in the online transactions, things like that.  You have to realize what’s trust today is not trust tomorrow because what is today is not what is tomorrow.  And I think that just has to be part of the discussion.
