Commercial aviation has transformed the United States and world economies during the last 50 years, and aviation demand is expected to increase significantly in the future. While the economic and social benefits of air transportation growth could be substantial, accompanying environmental impacts have the potential to harm human health and the environment, and constrain aviation growth itself. Effective sustainability strategies must take a holistic lifecycle approach. For instance, if reducing air quality emissions in the manufacturing process results in the production of a heavier aircraft, there is likely to be a total increase in environmental harm. A lifecycle approach will evaluate the magnitude of environmental harm throughout the life of the product, and optimize investment to get the greatest environmental benefit for the lowest cost.
