Lori is absolutely right on in her point that we shouldn’t stop progress on HIEs to wait for more clarity around ACOs. HIEs are playing that foundational role in moving the ball forward on policy (like security and privacy) and a host of interoperability and technical challenges. These need to be resolved regardless and HIEs are playing that important role. This conversation clearly points to the need to continue to mature the overall HIE landscape and shows a future path and value for HIEs as potential ACOs. On a side note, the ACO is also a benefit for the public health side of things, where advocating for coordinated care and medical home-type approaches allow for greater overall public health benefits.
