In the field of life sciences, much of the information we digest is typically through scientific articles and journals. This has been the conventional method used to distribute information, such as new pharmaceutical drugs and treatments, but publishing articles can take a very long time. In fact, the general way in which scientific information is distributed today would have been familiar to Newton, and has not changed very much since then, despite the advances in science and information technology. Bioinformatics as a field is relatively new, growing into major impact only in the last 15 to 20 years, and I have seen it go from almost nothing to a key aspect of biomedicine during my career. Read more
