I see computers becoming "analysts" in the areas where the data is overwhelming in terms of both volume and heterogeneity. This is the area where a human cannot possibly hope to manage. Work is already being done in the scientific community that reverses the traditional process. Rather than develop a theory and then analyze the data to see if it fits, the data is used to generate possible theories. When it comes to areas like weather and climate or high energy physics, the amount of data is staggering. The computing grid for the Large Hadron Collider at CERN is designed to store 15 Petabytes of data. Processed correctly, this data can reveal the secrets of the universe.
