Booz Allen’s 2015 Working Mother of the Year Keeps It All in Balance
Booz Allen Hamilton congratulates our 2015 Working Mother of the Year, Lead Technologist Tuyet-Anh (“Anh”) Nguyen. The annual award recognizes outstanding mothers who serve as strong role models or mentors, and exude a positive influence at work, at home, and within their communities.
Winners are also recognized externally, by Working Mother magazine, which asks each of the companies on its annual “100 Best Companies” list to share the name of its Working Mother of the Year. Booz Allen was named to the list for the 17th consecutive year in September.
Anh, our 2015 honoree, has been with Booz Allen for 13 years, providing Systems Engineering support to a number of Federal Government clients. She is a wife and a mother to five children—Noah (12), Madeleine (8), Arielle (7), Hannah (5), and Daniel (1)—all born since Anh joined the firm in 2002.
In fact, Anh didn’t know it, but she was in her first week or two of pregnancy when she began working at Booz Allen. “I had heard about the firm’s great benefits and focus on work-life balance, which I knew would be extremely important when my husband and I started our family,” Anh says. “But I didn’t know just how soon I would benefit from them. My pregnancy with my first son was high-risk and he was a preemie, and my team allowed me to work remotely and with a flexible schedule throughout that critical time.”
Outside of work, Anh is passionate about photography and is an avid volunteer. Every year for the past 27 years, she has dedicated at least 150 hours to volunteering—for various non-profits, in her community, at her children’s school, and through company pro bono initiatives. She says she really enjoys rolling up her sleeves and putting her all into helping.
Anh also instills her belief in the importance of giving back in her children. She frequently involves them in volunteer activities, from packaging meals for the hungry and helping to raise thousands of dollars for various non-profits, to laying wreaths at the Arlington National Cemetery and hosting events through TAPS (Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors) for children who’ve lost a military parent. In addition to TAPS, Anh regularly supports Operation Homefront, March of Dimes, Autism Speak, Martha’s Table, and So Others Might Eat (SOME).
At home, Anh’s a very hands-on Mom, actively involved in her children's school and extracurricular activities. Although she’s in the IT field, her kids are “unplugged” from TV and other devices. Instead, she sparks their interest in DIY art projects, nature walks/plays, gardening, and their fun (and healthy!) Bento Lunches. In fact, a couple of years ago, Anh made an appearance on an NBC morning news program, to demonstrate how to make creative and healthy school lunches for kids, that was broadcasted on over 150 NBC stations!
When asked how she manages to keep it all in balance, Anh laughs. “I guess you could say that I approach my roles at work, home, and in the community like juggling multiple projects—I regularly ensure that I’m working against the priorities, allocate my hours appropriately, focus on results, and deliver across all of them.”
In addition to her Booz Allen recognition, Anh, along with the other “100 Best Companies” Mothers of the Year and their children, are featured online at workingmother.com, on Working Mother social media, and in a special commemorative Working Mothers of the Year special event publication. She was also honored at the Working Mother annual Work Life Congress Gala Awards Dinner—where Booz Allen also received its “100 Best Company” award—on October 15 in New York City.
