Unified Quest Army Future Warfare Study

Unified Quest Army Future Warfare StudyThe annual Unified Quest Army Future Warfare Study is a series of experiments, studies, and wargames that help the U.S. Army identify potential threats to missions that will occur in the years ahead. Military leaders use the study to build forces and solutions to counter emerging threats.

To support this program, the Army asked Booz Allen Hamilton to create wargaming activities to visualize future warfare.

The Booz Allen team included specialists in modeling, simulation, and analysis, and former military and civilian leaders who provided understanding of military culture and requirements, politics, international finance, and more. They collaborated to build the integrated Gaming System, which creates complex, realistic scenarios that help participants visualize the consequences of their potential actions.

These exercises provided Army leadership with valuable information, including the need for stability policing capabilities during stability operations. They also showed that irregular warfare would require close engagement with coalition partners and new operational concepts, a prediction realized years later.

Since it was introduced, Unified Quest has helped the Army anticipate many of the challenges it now faces, as well as the rising demand for intelligence and information operations in modern warfare’s complex environments.

Today, Unified Quest combines information from experience and scholarly study into exercises that test theories, reveal gaps in capabilities, and present a forum for ideas. The study culminates in a week-long wargame involving 300+ leaders from the government, military, and U.S. allies, providing additional insights into future warfare.
