The sweeping Next Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) will transform the nation’s aviation system by using satellite technology and other breakthroughs to improve the safety and capacity of the nation’s runways and skies.
By 2025, NextGen could potentially triple air traffic capacity and save billions by reducing gridlock and delays.
The Federal Aviation Administration engaged Booz Allen Hamilton to help define how NextGen will unfold.
Since 2006, Booz Allen has worked with the Joint Planning and Development Office (JPDO) and government stakeholders to incorporate policy and new processes into a concept of operations for NextGen. The firm helped JPDO develop the NextGen enterprise architecture (EA), describing the future state of operations of the air transportation system and planning and management activities necessary for NextGen implementation.
In addition, Booz Allen completed an Integrated Work Plan (IWP), a tool similar to a blueprint, which assesses the dimensions of NextGen that include trajectory, performance, and airport operations, within the context of a net-centric infrastructure. The firm also helped develop a business case and comprehensive cost – benefit analysis.
But the heart of the NextGen effort is the Joint Planning Environment (JPE) tool that Booz Allen developed for the JPDO. This Web-accessible application allows all NextGen stakeholders to collaborate and make decisions more quickly than they would in a traditional paper-based planning environment.
The General Accounting Office recognized Booz Allen’s work on NextGen, and the JPDO awarded Booz Allen its first Vision 100 award for outstanding contribution to leadership.
