Vice President Tom Moorman Elected Chairman of the Board of the Space Foundation

Respected organization advances space awareness through education and major industry events, including the National Space Symposium.

Tom MoormanThe board of directors of the Space Foundation has elected Booz Allen Hamilton vice president Tom Moorman to a two-year term as chairman, starting January 31, 2008.

The Space Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing initiatives and educational endeavors that increase awareness of the benefits and importance of space. Founded in 1983, the Foundation conducts several conferences for space professionals, including the annual National Space Symposium, which is considered the preeminent gathering of its kind with more than 7,000 participants in 2007.

Moorman has been involved in space-related military and intelligence initiatives since 1970, and served as a board member of the Space Foundation since 1997. “Space has been my passion for virtually all of my professional life,” he says. “I like what the Foundation stands for, its interest in education, and its endeavors that advance the understanding of the critical importance of space and space-related activities.”

With programs that address K – 12 through undergraduate levels, the Space Foundation plays an important role in education and stimulates interest in the pursuit of science, math, and engineering careers. Its research, analysis, and government affairs arm also documents and facilitates discussion on national space issues.

As chair, Moorman expects to sustain and strengthen existing programs. “The influence and importance of the Foundation continue to increase and I’m excited about the future. The Foundation has a quality staff and an outstanding group of talented and dedicated people on its board.”

Over the last several years, Moorman has led Booz Allen’s work in support of the Air Force and NASA. A recognized thought leader, he speaks frequently at national and international space forums, and was named in 2004 by Space News as one of the top ten most noteworthy contributors to the U.S. space program.

He served more than 35 years in the U.S. Air Force, culminating with his assignment as Vice Chief of Staff—the second ranking position in the Air Force. In the course of his career, he has led a host of studies, including developing a strategic plan for the Air Force for the 21st century and leading a variety of space related assessments. Moorman also chaired the Air Force Council, which finalized all programming proposals.

Booz Allen has supported the Space Foundation for years and participates in Foundation-sponsored events. “Several years ago, the firm identified space as a major area of concentration. Consequently, today space is big business for Booz Allen,” Moorman says. “We provide a wide range of services for all four of the national space sectors: intelligence, military, civil, and commercial.”
