The State of Global Health: A Report from the 2006 Aspen Ideas Festival
A sampling of the best of the health-care sessions at Aspen.
In July 2006, at the Aspen Institute Ideas Festival, a team of health-care leaders from Booz Allen Hamilton convened a series of in-depth workshops with some of the most notable experts in the field, to explore the issues facing health care today:
-
The prospects of reform (and the opportunities and crises that might lead to reform of the health-care system in the U.S.);
-
The threat of pandemics, and their potential impact on the global economy;
-
The health challenges of chronic diseases, such as diabetes, in affluent nations and the need to develop and encourage preventative care;
-
The priorities for global health care—including AIDS, malaria, and tuberculosis—and the need to allocate and oversee research and treatment funding more effectively;
-
The ethical issues raised by new biomedical technologies, drugs and treatments that can accentuate human abilities, and other advances in health care;
-
The impact of an aging population on health care and the health-care system in both the United States and Europe.
This booklet represents a sample of the best of the health-care sessions at Aspen. It contains a brief overview of each session, some photographs taken at the event, and some thought-provoking and relevant quotes from panelists.
