Combating HIV/Aids

Booz Allen applies a megacommunity approach
to confront HIV/AIDS

The global HIV/AIDS epidemic weighs heavily on corporations and governments worldwide, and it is getting worse, especially in Africa, China, Russia, and India. Booz Allen combines its strategy and expertise in management consulting with health, public policy, and corporate interests to develop effective strategies that combat one of the greatest health challenges of our age.

HIV/AIDS is both a human tragedy and a global crisis. Public health issues like HIV/AIDS reach across international boundaries and present issues that are both urgent and complex. In 2007, an estimated 33.2 million people were living with HIV, 2.5 million were newly infected, and 2.1 million died of AIDS, according to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. Private and public stakeholders are affected by the spread of the disease as it hits many areas, including sales, labor resources, suppliers in emerging economies, multinationals and even entities outside of health-related sectors. All of these stakeholders are engaged in a fierce battle to combat HIV/AIDS. Recent research has uncovered the best practices among these approaches and efforts.

The scale and complex nature of HIV/AIDS are not things that can be solved by organizations acting alone. Fighting HIV/AIDS takes a megacommunity approach—a holistic, collaborative approach that organizes stakeholders around a singular purpose. Reaching beyond the boundaries of corporate walls, government agencies, and non-governmental organization is all important to success. Booz Allen partners with public, private, and not-for-profit organizations to take on the complexity of these challenges by helping to understand the linkages between organizations and individuals, and to navigate the dynamics.

Booz Allen conducted groundbreaking strategic simulations, forged strategic partnerships, performed detailed analyses, and helped mobilize the international business community to respond to the profound needs of this global health challenge.

In October 2003, Booz Allen hosted a groundbreaking HIV/AIDS strategic simulation in India. As a result of this and other initiatives, India has made an enormous difference in addressing the issue. Today, we continue to combat the challenges of HIV/AIDS by applying our holistic approach and diverse capabilities to this multi-dimensional issue.
