I Don't Have To Hide Here
It wasn't the actual formation of GLOBE, the Booz Allen forum for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees and their friends, that revealed the strength of the firm's core value of diversity for McLean-based Senior Associate Heather Lawson.
Instead, it was in the days and weeks afterwards, when "a flood of support rolled in from people all over Booz Allen for what we were doing," Heather explains. "It was then that the true value of our group came through—both to staff who are gay and lesbian, and to friends on the outside who wanted to support us, but until then, didn't know how." That was more than seven years ago. Today, GLOBE is an integral part of Booz Allen's fabric, one of 15 employee affinity groups whose presence "send a message to staff, clients and prospective employees alike that people can simply be themselves at Booz Allen," says McLean-based Principal Jeane Dolan. "GLOBE and other affinity groups mean everyone can be comfortable here." whitewater rafting tripFor GLOBE member Bill DelGrosso, creating a welcoming environment is a positive experience on several levels. "Having the freedom to be who we are means we're judged by the content of our character and the quality of our work at Booz Allen," says the McLean-based associate. "It's not just the right thing to do; it's good economics. That allows everyone to shine and, in turn, produce great results for clients." Heather agrees. "Booz Allen identified the value of mixing it up and bringing a lot of diversity, and in turn, value to the workplace," she says. "It's an encouraging and thriving environment, which makes me more effective in my role. I don't have to hide here—and that's good for everyone. story posted February 22, 2006 Additional Information:
