not just a job.”
Keatra Fuller
, Senior ConsultantWhy did you choose Booz Allen?
I was looking for a career and not just a job, and I was working at a consulting company that did not have a structured assessment process. Booz Allen’s 360-degree assessment appealed to me because it allows me to develop personally and professionally based on feedback from everyone—my peers, co-workers, client, and team leaders. The assessment encourages you to be a good colleague as well as a good consultant.
I also liked the people at Booz Allen. They’re unique—driven to go above and beyond, dedicated to public service, and each seems to have his or her own personal mission and the determination to achieve it.
How has Booz Allen helped you prepare for a career as a consultant?
My work allows me to use the skills that I’ve developed professionally and academically, including financial management and budgeting. Eventually I’d like to pursue an MBA, and Booz Allen is all about continuous learning, so it will help me balance school with work and provide tuition reimbursement.
Do you have a mentor at Booz Allen?
One of my mentors is the person who interviewed me. He’s provided great insight into the firm and all aspects of my career. There’s nothing too big or too small for me to ask—he even proofread my resume. My other mentor provided me with guidance on writing Power Point presentations that was so good, I suggested she create a “buddy group” to help others. She’s given me valuable feedback about my performance that no one had ever said before. For both mentors, it’s more than just the work—they’re concerned about your growth, too. I also appreciate the lack of pressure from managers here to achieve the next level. You can tailor your career goals to your schedule.
What is the most important thing that working at Booz Allen has taught you about yourself?
I’ve learned that I am one cog of an efficient machine with many moving parts. Booz Allen’s ability to deliver quality solutions to clients depends on my ability to work well with not only those clients, but also with team members in and outside my group. Booz Allen hires people who respect all opinions and will consider different perspectives to find the best solution. You need to understand the big picture, but you also have to excel at the steps it takes to get there.
Describe a time when you saw one of the firm’s Core Values in action.
As a new member of the firm, I had an opportunity to work closely with a principal on a multi-million-dollar proposal. I was the most junior-level person on the project, but I always felt as if I was a valuable member of the team. The principal actively engaged me for feedback and asked for my ideas as to the best position our firm should take for the proposal. In my old company, this would never happen; principals were people we saw at corporate holiday parties, but we never worked side-by-side with them.
