Environmental Responsibility

Environmental responsibility needs local solutions

More and more, the world is recognizing the consequences of climate change.  Concerns such as coastal flooding and threats to biodiversity are driving awareness that environmental responsibility is not only an imperative, but also a good business practice.

Booz Allen cares deeply about protecting our planet for future generations. Since the 1970s, when the government asked for our help with emerging energy and environmental issues, we’ve been finding solutions that achieve organizational missions with environmentally responsible actions.

Of the world’s complex challenges, environmental responsibility is one of the most fundamental.

Making Sound Choices

It all comes down to choice. At Booz Allen, we choose to give back to the communities in which we live and work by cleaning rivers, planting trees, and creating green spaces. We helped remove debris from Virginia’s Rappahannock River; cared for native plants near the Presidio in California; and replaced trees downed by hurricanes in Atlanta.

We create value from environmental activity through our innovative work with the U.S. military. For example, when Eglin Air Force Base opened 280,000 acres in Florida to the public for hunting, fishing, and other activities, Booz Allen helped quantify the value of the recreational use of the land.

For the firm, environmental responsibility includes ensuring healthy work and living spaces, indoors and out. Our partnership with the Ocean Conservancy included a pro bono project to develop a three-year strategy for the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) to support the health of the world’s oceans and waterways.

Booz Allen teams participated in the ICC—the world’s largest volunteer effort of its kind—to remove trash from rivers, lakefronts, and beaches in dozens of cities and begin to change behaviors that produce marine debris. In Kansas, we collected trash from Indian Creek; in California, we cleaned a tributary of the San Francisco Bay; and in Honolulu, we removed debris near Ala Moana Beach Park.

Support for a "Green" Wolf Trap

In addition, Booz Allen provided pro bono support to the Wolf Trap Foundation for the Performing Arts in the first-of-its-kind effort to incorporate eco-friendly practices into the performing arts. We provided technical expertise and operational guidance to meet Wolf Trap’s ambitious goals.

Later that year, Wolf Trap, Americans for the Arts, and The Aspen Institute held the first national summit on arts and the environment at Booz Allen’s McLean, Virginia campus. The event raised awareness about sustainability issues in the arts community and identified strategies to link the arts with practices that support environmental responsibility.

With our deep understanding of the US National Park Service’s mission and its operational culture, we assisted the organization in developing an asset management program to identify park assets and assess their condition, value, and sustainability requirements to determine where to focus resources. We also helped them analyze facility ownership cost for Washington, DC’s National World War II Memorial.
