When the San Antonio Business Journal announced the winners of its fifth annual “Best Places to Work” Awards, Booz Allen Hamilton was again on the list, for the fourth consecutive year.
The 48 best company workplaces in the San Antonio region were recognized at a luncheon on June 4, 2009 at the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort and in a special publication in the Journal on June 5. Booz Allen was ranked fifth in the large business category, based on number of employees. Principal Mike Reed accepted the award on behalf of the firm.
“Beyond recognition in the community, we’re most pleased that our staff believe in the firm, feel they’re part of our future and have a voice in our operations, and get the credit for a job well done,” says vice president Paul Doolittle.
Winners were selected based on the results of online confidential surveys completed by company employees who ranked their organizations on factors such as trust in coworkers, feeling valued, and individual contribution.
It’s been a historic year for San Antonio: In 2009, the office also celebrated its 15th anniversary of consistent growth, which is reflected in its 30% jump in staff since 2008. “We were 20 people in 1994, and now we number 696,” says associate Lynne Thompson.
“Ninety percent of the staff who responded to the Journal survey strongly agreed that our office enjoys team effectiveness, is aligned with goals of individuals, and trusts its co-workers, but the attribute that they rated highest was trust in our senior leaders,” Thompson adds. “Paul is the senior leader who sets the tone for this office. Our staff respects each other and we have matured as a solid team.”
“We are a thriving office with a strong commitment to clients as well as to community service,” Doolittle says, noting that 92% of Booz Allen staff contribute to a nonprofit and 74% volunteer with a nonprofit. “People are happy to have opportunities to work with a great group of people.”
The geographic region has also become an ideal environment for career development. Opportunities that emerged due to a BRAC in 2005 and other Department of Defense transformation initiatives are now being fully realized and will drive San Antonio’s growth for the next several years, says Doolittle.
Booz Allen’s San Antonio office supports three major markets in the area:
These and related opportunities allow the San Antonio office to leverage its core capabilities in information assurance, environment and installation engineering management, intelligence and information operations, IT and health IT, applied economic and business analysis, and more, for clients that include the U.S. Air Force, Army, DoD, Joint Forces Command, and Army Medical Command.
To be eligible as a potential best place, companies submit a nomination and notify their staff; at least 50% of the total staff must then complete an online survey to qualify for the award. Responses are assessed by the Journal’s research partner, Quantum Workplace, to determine the best places to work. More than 200 San Antonio companies were nominated this year.
