Dr. Ralph Shrader Talks About Leadership and Entrepreneurs
Booz Allen Chairman and CEO Ralph Shrader cited clarity of vision, confidence, leadership, and passion as essential traits found in today's star entrepreneurs.
Shrader spoke at the October 15-18 2000 Strategic Management Society's 20th Annual Meeting, which was co-sponsored by Booz Allen and the University of British Columbia.
Shrader is not alone in his belief that entrepreneurs, like star athletes, are born with innate talent and unique vision. 'Passion is the fire that makes stars and entrepreneurs push harder and farther despite the odds,' Shrader said. 'And, passion is contagious — it inspires others.'

Shrader believes leaders of companies can do several things to create the right climate for these success factors — to make organizations places where stars want to work because those companies will make the most of their talent and efforts. Measures include rewarding achievement and talent, holding team members accountable to the same rules, and supporting employees with a solid infrastructure so they can focus on what they do best.
'Stars and entrepreneurs are rugged, talented individuals — but they are still social creatures,' said Shrader. 'And they will be happier and more successful when they feel a strong psychic connection to their company or team.'

This year's Strategic Management Society (SMS) conference provided participants an opportunity to explore what it means to formulate and execute strategy in an age of entrepreneurship with an emphasis on e-business, innovation, and knowledge.
