Working Mother Magazine: Booz Allen Hamilton Ranks Again Among Top 100 Companies For Women

Working Mother magazine has again ranked Booz Allen Hamilton among the nation's most family-friendly companies.

Award Coincides with Opening of New Child Care Center in McLean

McLean, Virginia, September 5, 2000—Working Mother Magazine has again ranked Booz Allen Hamilton among the nation’s most family-friendly companies. The magazine’s selection of the “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers,” published yearly since 1986, has become an international benchmark of corporate human resource trends that advance the interests of families in the workplace.

Booz Allen, the leading management and technology consulting firm focused on business strategy and transformation, was also honored by the magazine last year in its 1999 list of “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers.”

Today, Booz Allen also opened its new Booz Allen Family Center, a child development center located on the plaza level of the Edwin Booz building at company headquarters in McLean. The Center accommodates more than 80 children of employees and features an all-day kindergarten as well as extended hours care. Bright Horizons Family Solutions, one of the country’s leading providers of work-site childcare, manages the Center.

"How fitting that these two extraordinary events should coincide during Labor Day week when the whole nation celebrates the workforce," said Ralph Shrader, Chairman & Chief Executive Officer. "Both the accolade from Working Mother Magazine and the opening of our new Center are concrete examples of our commitment to be the employer of choice in the consulting industry. Having balance in their lives enables our people to perform superbly for our clients and fulfill their family responsibilities and personal interests."

Working Mother selected 2000’s 100 Best Companies based on five criteria: child care, leave for new parents, flexible work arrangements, work/life benefits such as elder care and adoption assistance, and opportunities for women to advance. Editors looked at a range of supportive company offerings, including health insurance premiums, availability of time off to care for sick kids, mentoring programs and extras such as on-site gyms and other conveniences.

"This year the competition was tougher than ever before," says Lisa Benenson, Editor In Chief, Working Mother Magazine, explaining how this year's onorees for the annual list were chosen. The company had to demonstrate that a significant number of employees company-wide were receiving benefits. In other words, businesses had to be more creative and proactive in finding ways to accommodate their employees' work/life needs. For this, their commitment and ingenuity is to be commended.

A complete report of Working Mother’s 2000 “100 Best Companies for Working Mothers” can be found in the October issue of Working Mother and on its Web sites www.workingmother.com and www.workingwoman.com.

“We find that Booz Allen’s ‘life-friendly’ policies and benefits, along with our active involvement in community service, create a strong attraction for current and prospective employees,” said Jean Callahan, Director of Recruiting at Booz Allen.

Working Mother Magazine, founded in 1979, reaches more than 3 million readers each month, and is the only national business magazine written for executive and entrepreneurial mothers. It is part of Working Woman Network, a leading global resource for businesswomen in today’s digital economy, which also includes Working Woman magazine, the National Association for Female Executives, a conference division, Businesswomen’s Research Institute and The Business Women’s Network. In August, led by CEO Kay Koplovitz, WWN launched WorkingWoman.com, the first online resource center exclusively for women in business.
