A Great Place to Work logo - Washingtonian magazineWashingtonian magazine honored Booz Allen Hamilton as a “Great Place to Work” for the sixth consecutive time at an October 23, 2009 luncheon, where magazine officials called the firm “the Colossus of the Washington, D.C. area.” Booz Allen received special acknowledgement from the senior editor and chairman of the Washington Board of Trade.

In addition, the Washingtonian noted in its November 2009 issue that Booz Allen Chairman and CEO Dr. Ralph Shrader will be named to the Washington Business Hall of Fame on December 1.

The magazine stated that employees are proud of the firm’s reputation and its work on issues from healthcare reform to cybersecurity. An accompanying story cited benefits especially valued by staff, including child care at Booz Allen’s McLean campus; financial assistance for adoption and in-vitro fertilization; an elder care management program; a learning center with onsite and online classes; and a salary contribution to the retirement plan.

The magazine also noted Booz Allen’s substantial impact on the community; staff volunteered more than 82,000 hours and the firm donated over $6 million to charities in 2008.

Washingtonian publishes its Great Places to Work list every two years. Winning companies are selected based on a random survey of company staff. The magazine considered more than 200 employers and reviewed more than 13,000 employee surveys to select this year’s winners. In 2009, workplace attributes most important to staff included compensation and benefits; flexibility; challenging work; development opportunities; their organization’s financial stability; and how well management communicated with staff.

The annual Washington Business Hall of Fame honors five local business leaders who made significant contributions to the quality of life in the Washington region. A fundraiser that supports financial literacy programs for K-12 students, the Hall of Fame event was founded in 1988 by the Greater Washington Board of Trade, Junior Achievement of the National Capital Area, and Washingtonian.
