Booz Allen Presented with Two Awards for its Support of Veteran-Owned Businesses

The firm far exceeds federal subcontracting diversity goals to win one award for the fourth consecutive year, and the other for the second year in a row.

At the Veteran-Owned Business Accountability (VOBA) Summit in Washington, D.C., Booz Allen Hamilton was honored for its support of veteran-owned small businesses (VOSBs) and service-disabled veteran-owned small businesses (SDVOSBs) by being named—for the fourth time—as one of the 10 Best Corporations for Veteran-Owned Small Businesses.

At the same time, Booz Allen was also presented with the Veterans Administration (VA) Corporate Champion Award for the second consecutive year. Senior associate Bob Brennan accepted both awards on behalf of the firm.

Booz Allen nearly tripled the federal subcontracting diversity goal of 3% to SDVOSBs by subcontracting 8.7% to these businesses in government FY 2007, while it subcontracted 14.5% of its expenditures to VOSBs.

The National Veteran-Owned Business Association (NaVOBA) and VA’s Center for Veterans Enterprise (CVE) teamed up at the June 2008 summit to recognize the efforts of the firm and other large organizations that use small businesses owned by military veterans as their preferred suppliers. Both organizations named Booz Allen to their lists of corporate honorees, and the firm was featured in the June 2008 issue of NaVOBA’s Vetrepreneur magazine.

The VA Corporate Champion Award honors contractors that have opened doors for veterans through unique, innovative, or comprehensive business support. Awardees must excel in overall management and achieve subcontracting goals with a minimum of $1 million spent, exceptional results, or special achievements.

“These awards are a reflection of Booz Allen’s strong commitment to the veteran community,” says principal Ray Thomas.

“VOSBs and SDVOSBs contribute to Booz Allen’s successful client engagements and bring new ideas, innovations, capabilities, and diversity to our clients and to us,” associate Diane Marsden says. “Through relationships with businesses of diverse backgrounds, Booz Allen has increased its competitive advantage and its services to clients, improved processes, and ultimately fulfilled the firm’s promise to help clients succeed.”

The firm also won numerous other awards over the past year, including the DoD’s Inaugural Prime Subcontracting Award for subcontracting excellence with SDVOSBs.

The Business Accountability Summit offers participants a chance to share best practices from government and corporate America to strengthen business opportunities for veterans.

A Strong Working Relationship with Veterans

The firm provides a broad range of opportunities for small businesses to play major roles in its federal contracts, including management consulting, modeling and simulation, systems engineering, IT, engineering support, help desk support, and systems development and integration services.

Booz Allen directed 57% of its subcontracted dollars to small businesses in government FY 2007, 3% of which had to be targeted to VOSBs and SDVOSBs supplier diversity goals to qualify for the NaVOBA award. The firm’s actual results far surpassed this threshold, with 191 VOSBs subcontractors engaged, comprising over $76 million of its subcontractor budget, and 57 SDVOSBs for over $46 million.

“We take great pride in being named as a Best Corporation for VOSBs,” says Thomas. “We’re proud of our efforts to create a strong working relationship with veterans while bringing world-class solutions to our clients.

“Booz Allen firmly believes that those who have served and protected our country are crucial to our nation’s lasting viability and deserve the maximum practicable opportunity to do business with prime contractors and the government,” he adds.

In 2007, Booz Allen was involved in numerous events to reach the 3 million veteran-owned businesses in the U.S., including the National Veteran’s Small Business Conference, Navy IT Day, Army IT Small Business Conference, Navy Gold Coast Conference, and many more.

Due to these outreach efforts and greater emphasis on veteran subcontracting opportunities, the firm increased SDVOSB and VOSB subcontracting expenditures by an average of 60% from FY 2006 to FY 2007.
