Booz Allen Named One of Washington, D.C.'s "Great Places to Work"

The firm’s work, culture, and training are lauded in the Washingtonian article.

Washingtonian's "Great Places to Work" 2007 logoWashingtonian magazine has named Booz Allen Hamilton one of the Washington, D.C. metro area’s “Great Places to Work” in its November 2007 issue. The firm was chosen from more than 225 other candidate companies, non-profits, and government agencies.

Booz Allen’s interesting work, diverse culture, and generous training opportunities were cited by the magazine as the primary reasons for its inclusion on the list. The Washingtonian has published its biannual “Great Places to Work” feature since 1999, and Booz Allen has been included on the list each time.

In an accompanying article, the Washingtonian noted the firm as an especially promising place to launch a career. Coincidentally, Booz Allen was also named to BusinessWeek’s 2007 list of “Best Place to Launch a Career” for the second consecutive year.

Says principal and recruiting director Liz Miller, “More than half of the firm’s new hires—about 2,000 people—were referred by staff members who already work at Booz Allen. That says a lot about how much our employees enjoy their jobs.”

Booz Allen’s Career Mobility program and onsite university—i.e., a well-attended MBA program in partnership with Johns Hopkins University—are praised in the Washingtonian article.

The Career Mobility program provides employees a way to find other positions within the firm without leaving Booz Allen.  The program matches available positions to an individual's skills.  Staff reach for Career Mobility when they want to pursue a new challenge, to work with a different client, are thinking about relocating, or want to put a new degree or certification to use.

The firm’s perks for young professionals is also noted: “Many managers at Booz Allen came up through the ranks—and know what it’s like. ‘In a firm of almost 19,000, it is important for junior staff to have accessible leadership, and I have found that most senior employees are genuinely interested in supporting the advancement of junior staff,’ says Booz Allen senior consultant Gil Unangst, 26.”

Booz Allen’s onsite daycare and gym, wide array of forums and clubs, and generous tuition reimbursement initiative are also included in the article.

Washingtonian staff selects its great places to work from 16,000 surveys completed by local employees. The publication pays particular attention to data on turnover, layoffs, and employee referral rates, and says it weighs employee satisfaction heavily. Magazine staff also visits many of the candidate organizations.
