Mark J. Gerencser

Mark Gerencser, a Booz Allen Hamilton Executive Vice President, advises government, private, and non-profit sectors on how to create and sustain megacommunities to solve complex problems in infrastructure development and enhancement.  He has significant expertise and depth across the energy, environment, and transportation sectors.

Previously, he served as the Managing Director of the firm’s Global Government business, leading the expansion of public sector business within the U.S. and abroad. He also served on the firm’s Board of Directors as well as on the Leadership Team that set Booz Allen’s strategic agenda, including market direction and strategy, resource allocation, and major investments.

Mr. Gerencser’s experience includes national and global security topics where he led the firm’s National Security business, created its Homeland Security team, and started the commercial Enterprise Resilience business, serving clients in consumer, financial services, energy, and healthcare industries. He also initiated Booz Allen’s cyber-space strategic investment.

Mr. Gerencser’s external leadership roles include heading an industry expert panel to address the National Security Agency’s infrastructure resilience; facilitating CEO roundtables to address interdependencies between business, trade, and security; hosting a cyber-summit of Fortune 1,000 firm and government agency CIOs to create a shared agenda on information privacy and assurance; chairing technology studies for the Electronics Industries Association to forecast impacts of technological change; leading war games and multi-stakeholder simulations to address port security, bioterrorism, and cybersecurity; and representing industry to the Office of the Secretary of Defense Net Assessment initiatives to assess U.S. defense readiness.

He created the U.S. National Security Scholarship Program, which works with universities and government to recruit new talent into the national security community. Mr. Gerencser was nominated by the President and confirmed by the Senate Armed Services Committee as a member of the National Security Education Board, chaired by the Secretary of Defense. He is a member of Business Executives for National Security and serves on its board. He is also a member of the University of Maryland’s Board of Visitors, which awarded him the President’s Medal in 2009 for his leadership in advancing higher education. He is a board member of the Maryland Security Technology Initiative, which incubates new technology companies for cybersecurity. ExecutiveBiz magazine named him as a Top 10 Game Changer in Washington, D.C. in 2009, and in 2007, Consulting magazine named him as one of the 25 most influential consultants in the world.

He has authored articles on technology and its impact on business and national security (i.e., “Artificial Intelligence,” “Robotics and Robotic Vehicles,” “Toward a Digital Democracy”) and co-authored the best-selling book, Megacommunities. Mr. Gerencser has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, and L.A. Times, and appeared on television news programs on MSNBC, CNN, and Fox News. His most recent keynote speech on cybersecurity was recognized as one of “the best thoughts of the best minds on current national questions” by Vital Speeches of the Day in 2009.

Mr. Gerencser holds an M.S. degree in technology management from the University of Maryland University College and a B.S. in electrical engineering from Rutgers University College of Engineering.
